Have you ever wondered about the differences between City, State and Federal Law Enforcement? How about, who’s really in charge and why? What about the basic approach cops take when tackling a crime? If you’ve had any of the above questions, From a Cop’s Viewpoint Investigations 101 is the place for you. Written as a combination anecdotal, source and procedural book for writers wanting to accurately portray law enforcement, both in characterization and in investigation procedure. This book was written to hopefully entertain while imparting knowledge. My goal is to make the journey enjoyable for writers and non-writers alike.

This is a terrific novel for reference material regarding the different law enforcement agencies and their duties. Combine that with M.A. Taylor's biting sense of humor, there are parts that will make the reader laugh out loud. If you're a student or an author and need specific information on law enforcement duties, how the agencies work together or don't, how task forces are formed, specifics on wire tapping, surveillance, and so much more is covered in this novel. You'll get the terms law enforcement frequently use to make your novel sound accurate. She doesn't go on and on about herself and the cases she's worked, though she does give examples of situations she's been in to make certain the reader understands the topics she's addressing in that specific section. That's a balance that some former law enforcement may fall into while writing a novel, but M.A. completely avoids, giving the reader the information they seek without having to deal with loads of me, me, me I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread. This novel is great reference material for any student who has to write a paper, research for an article, book research, etc, with enough humor to keep a reader from growing bored or losing interest. Terrific job M.A. Taylor.

From a Cop Viewpoint Investigations 101 Law Enforcement 101 Volume 1 M A Taylor 9780692410806 Books Reviews
The real question is, do you want a little pamphlet you can flip through and pretend you did your research, or do you want a book full of actual information? Because this book is definitely the former. It's only 94 pages (and an inordinately large percentage of that is taken up by chapter 6, which is a long-winded, rambling story, apparently designed to point out how networking is important). Most readers will finish this book in just over an hour (especially if you give up the aforementioned chapter 6 and start skimming). I'm not saying the book is a total waste of time, but there just isn't much to it.
The day I bought this book, I also bought a used paperback copy of Police Procedure & Investigation A Guide for Writers (Howdunit). It was a few dollars more, but boy, was it worth it. It's a textbook-sized book with 360+ pages packed full of details -- everything from the police academy to DNA and autopsy to dealing with the courts. It's loaded with pictures, diagrams, and charts. In short, it's just WAY more bang for your buck.
If you are a writer and want to breathe authenticity in your work and get respect from the law enforcement community, M. A. Taylor's From a Cop's Viewpoint is an essential tool. It is also a great resource for new and experienced officers alike who want to pry open the clandestine world of their special task force officers.
Good and informative, exactly what I expected.
A collection of useful information on how various law enforcement agencies work and collaborate. This one is specific for California but gives insight on how to research your own communities. The author needs professional editing for grammar. She writes in a breezy informal style.
A great primer for writers, and anyone really, who wants to understand what goes into an investigation. There are a lot of acronyms that can get confusing, but Taylor tries to boil it all down. I especially enjoyed the stories of her time on the force. In fact, the book could've had a lot more of these used as examples of what she was explaining. I think there are more books in this series, so I'm off to find them.
M A Taylor has been teaching writers in workshop settings for several years and has an excellent grasp on what pieces of information writers most need in order to make characters realistic. This book offers much more than the basic structures of city, county, state, and federal agencies, it provides insight into how they work together and why they sometimes clash.
In reading this book you get to delve into the working vocabulary of law enforcement. There is also a section about how officers use different approaches for gather information in the field and in the interview/interrogation room. You will find great insight into how the writer can enrich the settings as well as characters.
I am looking forward to the rest of this series, especially the book on Homicide Investigation.
Now, if only there was a print version that I could mark up and fill with post-it notes while I work. That would be perfect.
Well done!
Not only has M.A. Taylor provided us writers essential information so that we don't have our fictional cops (DEA agents, FBI agents, etc.) doing something so unbelievable that she'd throw our books (or worse, her !) against the wall while vowing never to read our work again, she's written a writer's guide that is so wonderfully entertaining I could hardly put it down. Writers, if you're anything like me you jumped at an opportunity to do a ride-along with a member of your local PD. Consider this book the best ride-along ever, a great opportunity to "get it right." I highly recommend From A Cop's Viewpoint Investigations 101 -- a bargain at ten times the price!
